The British Sikh community raise £1,000 for the Rhys Daniels Trust

Extra Information: Around 80 members of the local Sikh community and other showed their support for three local mayor’s charities on Sunday 10th May by taking part in a challenging charity bike ride. The 17-mile cycle began at 8:30am in front of the Sainsbury's superstore in Ilford. The Mayors of Redbridge and Barking & Dagenham, a Newham Councillor, community leaders and local sports personality Fauja Singh “the 96 year old marathon runner” and his team also ran the 17 mile route with his team. The organisers of the bike ride said “we are very proud to be celebrating our 10th annual bike ride, we hope to make this bigger and better next year” “The event - organised by local volunteers, the LCC (London Cycling campaign), Gurdwaras, local councillors and businesses – We reached our set target of £4,000 and this will be distributed amongst the three mayor’s charities and our fourth chosen charity The Rhys Daniels Trust. The ride also celebrated Vaisakhi which is the Sikh New Year. Helping the needy is one of the core foundations of Sikhism and the bike ride is held in this spirit each year. Young British Sikhs and local community raise money for local charities. You do not have to be a Sikh to take part as it is open to all. Dhol players from the Dhol Academy created a festive atmosphere and the day was enjoyed by all. There was a cheque presentation ceremony held at Ramgharia Temple, Neville Road, Forest Gate on 20th June 2009. £1,000 was raised from this event for the Rhys Daniels Trust.
